Humility is a Key to Success

A vital principle in leadership is to be teachable. Effective leaders are self-aware, humble, and willing to learn from others.

Being teachable is simply a willingness to admit that we don’t know something and letting others teach us. It requires humility which demonstrates stronger, more authentic character than pride. Not only does humility not detract from our authority, it makes others feel safe to admit when they don’t know something, too.

Too many leaders believe that having authority means knowing everything or being right all the time. Unfortunately, this can defeat our efforts to create a strong, innovative team. How can anyone become truly competent if they aren’t free to ask questions, learn new information, or acquire new skills through a willingness to learn? How can they learn if they must act like they already know everything?

Replacing our know-it-all attitude with a growth mindset makes room for humbler (and truer) beliefs, such as, “I’m always learning”, “I don’t have all the answers”, “I love hearing other people’s ideas”. Humility builds better leaders, better teams, and better results.

Choose humility. Be teachable. Choose success.
